Features

Vaultron keeps photos, videos, files and notes in encrypted vaults on your device. Features marked Pro need a Pro plan. Everything else is free. See Plans and prices.

Vaults

  • One vault per pattern. Each pattern you create opens its own vault. The free plan allows 3 vaults; Pro has no limit on vaults.
  • Decoy vault. A separate vault with its own pattern. Opening it does not affect your other vaults.
  • Duress vault (Pro). A vault that removes every other vault from this device when its pattern is drawn. See Vaults and duress.

Photos, videos and files

  • Photos and videos, plus documents and notes.
  • Free plan: up to 100 photos and 10 videos in total across the device. Documents and notes are not counted.
  • Pro: no photo or video limit, and no vault limit.
  • Slideshow (Pro). Plays the photos and videos in a vault full screen. Each photo shows for 5 seconds; videos play to the end.

Library

  • Sort. Newest (the default), Oldest, Date taken, Largest, Smallest, Name, or Custom order (the order you set with Arrange). Date taken comes from the photo or video; items without one use the date they were added. Each vault keeps its own sort order, stored inside the vault’s encryption.
  • View. Next to the sort options (Sort and view), choose Thumbnails (the default) or List. In List, each row shows the thumbnail, the name, the type and date, and the size; folders show their number of items and total size. The choice applies to every vault on this device.
  • Item menu. Touch and hold an item to open, rename, export, move to a folder or delete it. The menu starts with the item’s size, type and date; for a folder, its number of items and total size. Export uses the share sheet, so you can save to Files or back to Photos.
  • Viewer. The header shows the item’s name and its position, count and file size (for example, “3 of 12 · 2.4 MB”) on a backdrop that stays readable over bright photos. Tap the item to hide or show the header and the other controls.
  • Tabs. All, Media, Documents and Notes.

Secure notes

  • Write notes inside a vault. They are encrypted like any other file, and included in backup, sync and shared vaults.
  • Formatting shows as you write, without any markup: bold, italic, title, heading and subheading, bulleted and numbered lists, and checklists (tap a checkbox to tick it). Typing - , 1. , [] or # at the start of a line starts a list, checklist or heading.
  • Find and replace (next and previous, match case, replace one or all), undo and redo, and a word and character count of the text you see, not counting formatting. Notes save automatically.
  • Search finds a note by its title and the first 2,000 characters of its text.
  • In the library, a note’s tile previews the start of the note the way it is written: line breaks are kept, headings, bold, lists and checklists show at small size, and empty lines are skipped so more fits. The tile updates when the note is saved.
  • Export a note as Markdown (.md) or plain text (.txt).
  • Notes do not count towards the free plan’s limits.
  • If the same note is edited on two devices at once, the newest save wins; the texts are not merged.

Getting things in

  • Import from Photos, up to 50 items at a time.
  • Import from the Files app, any file type, several at once.
  • Drag and drop on iPad.
  • Capture photos and videos with the in-app camera.
  • Optionally delete the originals after an import from Photos, Files or drag and drop. Each vault copy is checked before any original is deleted, and Vaultron asks first; for photos, iOS asks you to confirm too.
  • Import quality: Optimized (the default) stores photos as HEIC and videos as HEVC; Original keeps every file exactly as imported.

See Import and capture.

Backup, sync and sharing

  • Encrypted iCloud backup. Free, and on by default. Sealed to your 24-word recovery phrase, which you can change at any time. Choose Wi-Fi only, or Wi-Fi and cellular. See Backup and recovery.
  • iPhone and iPad sync (Pro). Keeps your vaults in step between your devices through your private iCloud. See iPhone and iPad sync.
  • Sharing. Creating a shared vault is Pro. Opening a vault someone shared with you is free. Location, camera and date details are removed from shared photos and videos. See Sharing.

Settings

  • Protect against screenshots and screen recording. On by default. Your library, photos, videos, documents and notes come out black in screenshots and recordings, and Vaultron shows a cover while the screen is recorded, mirrored or shown over AirPlay. A short notice after a screenshot says so (Notice after a screenshot, can be turned off).
  • Auto-lock. Immediately (the default), after 1 minute or after 5 minutes.
  • Shake to lock. On by default and free. If someone grabs the device while a vault is open, the sudden jerk locks the vault at once, and so do two or three quick shakes. Sensitivity: Low, Medium (the default) or High. See Shake to lock.
  • Pattern. Show or hide the line while you draw, and turn haptic feedback on or off.
  • This vault. Shows the number of items and the storage used, and lets you change the pattern or the vault’s type. Settings never shows which type a vault is.
  • Error reports. On by default; kept on your device until you send them. See Security.
  • Tutorial. Settings → About → Tutorial shows the welcome tour again. It changes nothing.
  • A product of Thundera Group. The footer at the end of Settings shows the Thundera Group logo in black in light mode and white in dark mode, and opens thundera.eu.

Personalization

  • Theme. System (the default), Dark or Light. A change applies at once, also to Settings while it is open. In light mode, buttons, links and accent text are black so they stay readable; in dark mode they are cyan.
  • Alternate app icons (Pro). Five icons: Aurora, Ember, Mono, Midnight and Gold.

Privacy

  • No account. No server. No analytics, ads or trackers.
  • Purchases are handled by Apple.
