Sharing
You can share items from a vault as an encrypted .vaultron file. Creating a shared vault is a Pro feature. Opening a vault someone shared with you is free.
Creating a shared vault (Pro)
- Choose the items to share.
- Vaultron generates a passphrase of six words for the file. Send the passphrase to the recipient separately from the file.
- Set the controls below, then share the file.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Expiry date | The shared vault stops opening after the date you choose. |
| Open limit | How many times the recipient may open it. From 1 to 100; the default is 5. |
| Export | Allow or block the recipient from exporting items. Allowed by default. |
These controls are enforced by the recipient’s Vaultron app, not by cryptography. They deter casual misuse. A determined recipient can still photograph the screen or copy what they can see.
Metadata
- Photos are re-encoded, and only their orientation is kept. Location, camera and date details are removed.
- Videos have their embedded metadata removed, including location and creation times.
- Documents are shared unchanged, so information inside them, such as a PDF’s author field, is kept. Remove it yourself before sharing if you need to.
- If Vaultron cannot remove the metadata from an item, the share fails rather than sharing the item with its metadata.
- Each item is encrypted again under a new key for the share file. Item dates are set to the time the share was made, and folders are not included. The file holds no vault id, device name, account name or iCloud id.
Receiving a shared vault
Open the file with Vaultron and enter the passphrase. Receiving is free. The controls set by the sender apply on your device. When the sender allows export, the item menu offers Export; notes are exported as Markdown (.md).
